Practical notes from an operator’s perspective.

Interviews are not personality tests. They are risk assessments.

Employers are evaluating one question:Can this individual perform, integrate, and deliver under pressure?

Strong candidates prepare accordingly.

1. Understand the OperationResearch the business model, service style, customer profile, and scale. An independent restaurant operates differently from a multi-site group. A lodge differs from a city hotel. Context matters.

2. Speak in Outcomes, Not DutiesAvoid listing responsibilities. Instead, demonstrate results:

  • Revenue growth achieved

  • Cost savings implemented

  • Team size managed

  • Systems introduced

Operators think in metrics.

3. Demonstrate Commercial AwarenessEven in non-financial roles, understand cost control, labour pressure, and margin realities. Every role influences profitability.

4. Show Operational ReadinessPunctuality, presentation, and clarity of communication are indicators of performance discipline.

Interviews are not about impressing. They are about demonstrating readiness.
